The East of England Surgical Cadaveric Simulation Programme for Higher Surgical Trainees

Please scroll down for further information about the Higher Surgical Training Cadaveric Courses taking place and to make an application.

The courses will take place at the Cambridge Surgical Training Centre, The Quorum, Barnwell Road, Cambridge CB5 8RE. 


This programme has been mapped to the intercollegiate surgical curriculum with funding from NHS England. Faculty from across the region will facilitate hands on training for regional higher trainees. The following courses will use fresh-frozen cadaveric tissue, to simulate the following areas in higher surgical training:

Transplant: 8th February 2024

Applications from non-transplant trainees are welcomed. Further course information and a programme will be sent following confirmation of place.

Breast and Endocrine Surgery: 12th February 2024

Course content: • Wide local excision• Skin sparing mastectomy • Subpectoral reconstruction • Axillary clearance • Latissimus Dorsi flap • Thyroid

Upper GI: 13th February 2024

Course content: • Laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy • Laparoscopic and open duodenal/ gastric ulcer perforation • Laparoscopic approaches to the hiatus • Distal gastrectomy • Splenectomy • Diaphragmatic herniation and repair • Visceral rotation and access to retroperitoneal structures.

Trauma: 26th February 2024

Course content: • Trauma Laparotomy • Packing abdomen • Assessment of injuries • Individual organ injuries and approaches • Chest Trauma (revision):              • Anterolateral & Clamshell Thoracotomy • Aortic control • Rapid control of major pulmonary haemorrhage • Accessing the heart • Repairing Myocardial defects
